Breast Implants Cause Rare Cancer — Patients, Are You Filing A Lawsuit?

Breast augmentation surgeries are naturally risky due to a series of potential complications. But according to health officials, the worst potential outcome (https://www.nytimes.com/2019/07/24/health/breast-implants-cancer-recall.html) is for a patient to contract a rare type of cancer known as anaplastic large cell lymphoma.

Around the world, officials registered 573 cases of the rare condition, with 33 patients dying as a result. At least 481 of these cases can be traced back to Allergan Biocell implants.

Because implants can lead to deaths, the Food and Drug Administration is recalling the textured breast implants made by Allergan. Unfortunately, this recall didn’t come fast enough to prevent deaths.

Are You At Risk Of Suffering Anaplastic Large Cell Lymphoma?

Anaplastic large cell lymphoma (ALCL) is a form of non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma. Women who undergo procedures to receive textured breast implants are at a higher risk of suffering the disease.

In 2011, the FDA first launched a warning regarding the risk of ALCL among women who had had breast implants. But it wasn’t until 2017, after the agency received over 300 reports of the disease, that officials classified the disease as a breast implant-associated anaplastic large cell lymphoma (BIA-ALCL).

According to the FDA, 186 cases out of the 312 cases reported to the agency involved silicone gel.

Symptoms of Breast Implant-Related Cancer

BIA-ALCL is more likely to develop around the scar tissue of the surgery. And perhaps, chronic inflammation is what makes this type of condition even worse. According to the FDA, women on average are diagnosed with ALCL ten years after receiving breast augmentation surgery.

The symptoms include:

● Pain around one or both breasts
● Fluid buildup
● Swelling
● Lumps
● Redness
● Development of hard mass

While in most cases, the implant’s removal is enough to keep the cancer from spreading, some cases require chemotherapy and radiation.

Defective Breast Implant Makers

While a few companies have been associated with the production of the breast implant, Allergan Biocell implants are being recalled at this moment, with companies like Mentor Worldwide (a subsidiary of Johnson & Johnson), Sientra, and Ideal Implant Incorporated are also known for producing these products.

Breast Implant Victims, Fight for Your Rights by Filing A Lawsuit

Victims may be entitled to compensation if the manufacturer of the breast implant was negligent, or if the implant’s design was flawed and dangerous.

The company can also be held liable if it failed to report the potential risks to patients and medical professionals.

Because those who suffer health conditions due to defective implants often lose their jobs or have to deal with costly medical bills, victims should not be left alone to deal with the consequences of a negligent action.
